Lantian Academy
Lantian Academy was founded in 1831, the eleventh year of the Qing Daoguang reign. Dedicated to Wenchang Dijun, the god of literature, it is the oldest of Nantou’s three academies. Around 1912, colonial-era urban planning turned its original site into a road, and the academy was torn down. Local gentry raised funds, and in 1917 it was rebuilt on today’s Wenchang Street.
Nantou City is where Shan Yu began. The academy was torn down, then rebuilt by the people around it. That wish to hold on to a place is what this box is about.
