Lugu Tea Culture Museum
After the competition, top-grade tea went from NT$84 to NT$5,000 per catty (600 g).
On 2 May 1976, the Lugu Farmers’ Association held its first Dong Ding Fine Tea Competition. Before it, Dong Ding oolong sold for about NT$84 per catty (600 g); afterwards, the top-grade tea fetched NT$5,000 per catty — nearly sixty times as much.
Judges scored each tea on aroma, appearance, liquor colour and spent leaves. Lin Guang-yan, who later served as the association’s general manager for many years, built up the grading, packaging and judging system step by step, keeping the competition fair, impartial and open. The standard for competition tea was set here.
The Tea Culture Museum, completed in 1996, is home to today’s spring and winter competitions. On the second floor, a wall of champions shows every top-prize grower since 1976 — from faded photographs to bright ones, one generation after another.
